Prototype 211/19/2023 I'm almost at the end, in the Red Zone doing missions for Dana, and God, it is just as bad as I expected, maybe even worse. Then I reluctantly decided to give Prototype 2 a go for the first time. Anyway, I greatly enjoyed it once again, more so than I expected. Most of the story came from the memories. One thing I had a gripe with was how short and direct the cutscenes were. The atmosphere of the world was great and obviously what hooked me the first time was still there - the gameplay. I found myself engrossed into the mysteries of the story, about Elizabeth Greene, Pariah, the real Alex Mercer, etc. The characters are not the most fleshed out, but they are surprisingly deep. The storyline is simple and very direct, straight to gameplay type of an idea, but it is surprisingly deep in its design. To my surprise I enjoyed it more than I would have expected. With the covid shit, I was in the mood for something with a similar concept and I've decided to once again (a week ago or so) replay the first one. So I just ignored it and pretended the first Prototype was all there is. I also heard Alex was made into an entirely different character and Heller never resonated with me from the trailers and gameplay, what not. Never bothered picking up Prototype 2 because I heard bad things about it. For its time it genuinely allowed you more freedom to do what you like than any other game. It was one of my favorites It wasn't the most thought provoking story, didn't have the greatest graphics or anything, but it had a certain charm to it insofar as the gameplay, the design of the world, Alex Mercer, etc. I played Prototype back in 2009 or 2010, can't remember. Mechanic wise, I found P2 a true improvement over P1, seems like Radical was really paying attention to 2009s forums. Now, after seeing all this between both games comes the question: why was P2 so hated? Was it because Alex was replaced with Heller? Was it because Alex got moved to a bad guy role? Story-wise, Alex changing from pseudo-antihero to villain could be a kick in the guts to some P1 fans, but I didn't find anything wrong with a new MC. Some of the previous unlockable upgrades now came as standard, like Glide and Stealth consume. Heller seemed a bit more charismatic than Alex, I liked him. A sort of different combat system, with 2 active powers at the same time, only 1 devastator type of attack and this new summon mechanic. Upgrade system was sort of reworked, with mutations from those collectibles/OPs/lairs/RADNET and level-up upgrades. I could play the game after installing it with no need of weird fixes (unless the ones I tried on P1 futureproofed P2's problems). Collectibles had a bit of a hint on their location, same for those new Field OPs and Lairs. Then I got to Prototype 2, which was almost an upgrade in every sense, at least to me. You had to unlock everything, from Glide and Stealth consume to others, no problem for me in that regard either. Alex is kind of an edgy dude but I don't really have a problem with that. ![]() Went full gold on all challenges and when I saw "platinum unlocked" I ALT-F4'd, lol). To my surprise, Prototype 1 was less user-friendly-ish(?), with the 200 unmarked collectibles and 50 unmarked hints (with no help on how to find them in such a vast map!), performance issues on the get-go and somewhat tedious driving mechanics (I had to do this "destroy military with a tank" event completely disoriented, thinking that if I pressed the D key the tank would go to that direction relative TO THE HULL, and not the camera. I played both Prototype 1 and 2 between 2010-2015, when I was a kid, and recently replayed both just to see how they stood up today. Just in case, I'm not trying to start controversy or anything like that
